Bed bugs are small roach looking bugs that feed on blood. While they will eat the blood of most any mammal they prefer human blood. Bed bugs get their name in a large part due to their feeding habits. Since they prefer to eat human blood and are nocturnal they tend to nest under or around where humans sleep. They eat until their stomachs are bloated and many times pop when the person they are feeding on rolls over. As bed bugs get older the blood diet turns them a dark amber color. Young bed bugs are clear before their first feeding. A great resource on bed bugs is the how do I know if I have bed bugs website. From it you can learn more about what bed bugs eat, what bed bug bites looks like and much more. So what do bed bugs eat? Answer: Blood

Seahorses may look like horses with fins, but they are actually fish! In the wild, seahorses are carnivores that cling to plants and suck up small prey through their long snouts. These victims are usually small crustaceans like tiny shrimp, but they also eat krill, larval crabs, plankton, aquatic bugs and baby fish. They have no teeth, so everything they eat is consumed whole, and most seahorses spend the whole day sucking in food. As babies, seahorses are so tiny that all they can eat are nearly-microscopic brine shrimp.

When kept in an aquarium, seahorses raised in captivity can be fed special seahorse food, or they will also eat frozen mysis shrimp. Wild seahorses that have been caught, however, will only eat the live food that they are accustomed to.

They are also one of the few lizard species to be entirely vegetarian, making them popular pets among reptile enthusiasts. In the wild, iguanas consume tropical plants and fruits, using their strong limbs and claws to climb up into the branches of trees. They eat over 100 varieties of plants, including wild plums, orchids, figs, vines, mangoes, bananas, rosemary and tomatoes. There have been some reports of iguanas eating dead fish and insects like grasshoppers, but many enthusiasts believe that too much protein can harm an iguana.

Captive iguanas are fed many different fruits and vegetables to stay healthy. Besides the plants listed above, popular foods include leafy greens like spinach and kale; fruits like mangoes, strawberries and grapes; turnip, mustard and collard greens; squash; and occasionally even bread.

Cockroaches are a type of insect that most people think of as dirty and gross. They are, however, actually clean and intelligent bugs. They get their nasty reputation from their diet of mostly rotting substances, but they are an essential part of many ecosystems, where they clean up things that could otherwise spread disease. Roaches prefer starchy, decomposing foods, but in truth they can eat almost anything. Fallen leaves, sugary items like rotten fruits and old meats would be their food of choice in the wild, but many cockroaches have adapted to life close to people. In a human home, cockroaches have been found eating paper, dead skin cells, glue, hair, any food that’s been left out, leather and even wood! Because of the abundance of things you might not even consider as a food source, it’s no wonder so many cockroaches take up residence in apartments, restaurants and houses.

Some centipede species eat plants, especially decaying vegetation like fallen leaves and tree bark, if they can’t find anything better like insects. Other centipedes are large enough to attack animals like mice, frogs, lizards and even flying creatures like birds and bats! Centipedes can capture such large prey because of their venom, but they are not deadly to humans. A centipede bite will swell up and hurt much like a bee sting if you are unfortunate enough to be bitten.

Moose have been known to eat fruits like apples, blackberries, raspberries and wild strawberries as well. In the winter, when food is scarce, moose eat the bark and needles off of pine trees to support themselves until tastier options return in the spring. Moose are a common sight in some gardens, too, where delectable fruits and vegetables make for easy pickings.

They also tend to be more aggressive, so most people spend more time avoiding them than trying to figure out what wasps eat. In fact, they are powerful predators that can hunt animals much larger than themselves thanks to a paralyzing venom in their stingers. Adult wasps do not eat their prey, however. Their unfortunate victims are instead destined for wasp larvae, which will usually only eat live food.

Adult wasps have tiny, narrow waists which don’t allow them to eat solid foods. This means they can only eat liquids, honeydew being a particular favorite. Wasps have also been known to consume the blood of caterpillars and small animals. Other wasps specialize in attacking colonies of honeybees, killing the workers and then stealing their honey. Wasp larvae produce a highly nutritious liquid which the adult wasps also eat.

Because of their small size and affectionate personalities, they are becoming popular pets in America. If you’re considering a sugar glider as a pet, it’s important to understand their natural diet and how to apply that in captivity. In the wild, sugar gliders are omnivores with something of a sweet tooth. They mostly eat insects and small invertebrates like beetles, spiders, snails and flies, but they also eat the sap and gum of eucalyptus and acacia trees, as well as honeydew, nectar and pollen.

As pets, sugar gliders can be fed crickets and mealworms, which are available at most pet stores, and then one fruit per day such as apples, bananas, grapes or melon. To keep things interesting, try also feeding meaty baby foods, yogurt or boiled eggs to your sugar glider.

They spend most of their lives in a larval stage, but transform into winged adults during the summer months in order to find a mate. When they are larvae, lightning bugs are predatory omnivores that eat creatures like worms, snails and slugs. They also eat dead animals like mice or even larger mammals, and dead organic material like rotting wood. The larvae follow slime trails left behind by slugs and snails and inject them with venom to paralyze their victims.

Adult lightning bugs are mostly focused on reproducing and do not live very long, so they eat less than their larval forms. It’s thought that they do sometimes eat plant nectar and pollen, collecting it from summer flowers like daisies and rhododendrons.

They make up half of all known life forms on Earth and their million different species also consume a million different things. Some, like butterflies and bees, eat pollen and nectar from flowers. Others, like dragonflies, catch prey and eat only meat, often other insects like ants, flies or beetles, which have their own unique diets. Ants, for example, collect leaves and other debris and then harvest the fungus that grows on them. Flies typically eat detritus such as rotting meat or animal feces. Most beetles, on the other hand, are herbivorous and eat leaves, flowers and fruits. Termites eat cellulose, or fibrous plant matter, which can be found in wood. As you can see, the world of insects is a huge and varied one, with no set diet even among related species!

Bobcats are wild cats in the lynx family. They are small but ferocious hunters that range across most of the United States. The main diet of a bobcat consists of rabbits and hares, which it is able to catch thanks to its large paws and long legs. Bobcats hunt through ambush, lying in wait and then pouncing when their unsuspecting prey walks by. They are opportunistic predators and will also catch mice, rats, squirrels, fish and birds when food is plentiful. In times when food is scarce, they resort to larger animals like foxes, skunks, cranes and even deer. Bobcats are considered a pest by farmers because they will also attack small dogs, cats, goats, chickens and sheep if they are hungry enough. Bobcats keep their larger meals fresh by burying them in the snow so that they can come back for more later.
They can be animals, plants or bacteria and are often very small, but not always so. For example, did you know that jellyfish are considered to be plankton? Because there are many types of plankton, they also eat many different things. Plant plankton, or phytoplankton, float where the sun shines brightly in the water and engage in photosynthesis. Bacterioplankton are not animals, but still consume organic materials and reproduce by cloning themselves. Zooplankton, or animal plankton, have several feeding methods. Some, like jellyfish, prey on larger animals such as fish. Others consume animal feces that descends from higher levels of the ocean, but most eat the phytoplankton and bacterioplankton floating along with them. Zooplankton may also eat their fellow zooplankton. All three types of plankton are essential parts of ocean habitats, and even mighty whales rely on them for food.
Note: For classification purposes the what do plankton eat page was placed under the arthropods category with the assumption we were talking solely about krill.

Great white sharks are the biggest predatory fish in the ocean, with a well-earned and fearsome reputation. Great white sharks eat just about anything they feel like, with only a few aquatic animals, such as whales, being able to evade capture. Their most common meals are large mammals such as seals, sea lions, sea otters, dolphins, porpoises and smaller whales like Belugas. They also consume plenty of fish, with tuna, salmon, sting rays and other sharks being their favored targets. Other prey includes sea otters, penguins, turtles and sea birds.

Great white sharks don’t take care of their young, so babies have to be ready to hunt from the day they’re born. Young great whites start with smaller targets like fish, moving up to harbor seals as they grow. Eventually they eat larger prey such as seals almost exclusively, hunting by ambushing from below. For more on what do sharks eat please visit the sharks site, which will have information on many different types of sharks.

The clown fish brush themselves regularly against the stinging tentacles of the anemone, giving them immunity from its toxin and thus also giving them a perfect shelter from predators. In return, they help the anemone in two ways. First, the clown fish eats small invertebrates which would hurt the anemone, including algae; tiny mollusks; and crustaceans known as copepods, Mysidacea, and isopods. It can also eat the discarded foods not absorbed by the anemone. Second, the feces of the clown fish provides valuable nutrients to the anemone.

Clown fish are popular choices for fish enthusiasts thanks to their bright colors. If you have one or two in your aquarium, they can survive on basic fish food, but they also need algae and preferably live food such as brine shrimp to stay healthy.

Goats are usually kept as domesticated livestock for their meat and milk and are either allowed to graze naturally or are fed a specialized diet. Free-ranging goats like to browse on scrub and bushes. They nibble at twigs and leaves and will even strip the bark off of trees! Some of their favorite plants include milkweed, mulberries, kudzu, blackberries, poison ivy, sunflowers, honeysuckle and raspberries. Because they don’t like grass and love many invasive weeds, some farmers make a living renting out their goats as weed control.

Goats that do not have access to a lot of pasture are usually fed a mixture of grass hay and oats. They may also be given supplements to make sure they are getting all the nutrition they need.

Catfish are bottom-dwelling fish with whisker-like appendages on their noses. Like most fish, they are predatory and can reach over 100 pounds in weight! Because they grow so large and are very tasty, catfish can live both in the wild and on farms. Wild catfish swim along the bottom of rivers, ponds and lakes looking for anything that has fallen from the surface. So what do catfish eat? Well, Catfish eat dead fish, snails, worms, animal feces, aquatic bugs, rotting plant vegetation, fish such as minnows and bass, leeches and carrion from other animals that have died in the water, like birds or even deer. Catfish aren’t picky and will eat just about anything. This makes them easy to farm, and in captivity they are fed a wide variety of foods including specifically formulated fish food; leftover scraps of meat from chickens, fish, pigs and cattle; and plenty of worms and other bugs.

They hunt in groups called pods in every ocean on Earth, and catch a wide variety of animals as a result. They are apex predators, meaning they have no natural threats as adults and hunt other carnivores like sharks. Their most common prey are fish like tuna, herrings, sharks and salmon, as well as mammals such as seals, dolphins and even other whales. Squids, sting rays and sea gulls are other easy meals for a hungry killer whale. In the icy waters near the Arctic, they will also hunt any penguins that venture into their territory. Baby killer whales, or calves, drink their mother’s milk until they are old enough to join the pod in hunting.

They are powerful predators with keen eyesight, which lets them see their quarry from over a mile away. Their most common prey are fish like salmon, trout, char, herrings and lances. These make up anywhere from 60 to 90 percent of Bald Eagles’ diets. They also catch and eat land mammals such as rabbits, raccoons and beavers, and waterfowl like ducks, geese, grebes and egrets. A Bald Eagle soars high above its victims before diving down and snatching them back up into the air.

Bald Eagles prefer fresh food, but will also eat carrion or steal from other predators. A dead deer or seal is a feast for Bald Eagles, but dead fish along the shore are also choice pickings. Some Bald Eagles even steal fish from another large fishing bird, the Osprey, in midair!

Wild turkeys eat by foraging on the ground and in low shrubs and trees. Their preferred foods are the nuts and mast of deciduous trees, such as acorns, hickory nuts, chestnuts and hazelnuts. They also eat berries like huckleberries, blackberries, juniper berries, blueberries and bearberries, along with seeds and grasses. Wild turkeys are omnivorous, meaning they will also consume insects, worms, mice, small lizards and snakes if they can find and catch them. In farm country, flocks of turkeys can often be found picking over fields after a harvest, collecting all of the dropped seeds.

Domesticated turkeys are raised for their meat, and so need to be more than double the weight of most wild turkeys when they are slaughtered. To accomplish this, they are fed a fattening mix of corn, soybeans and various vitamin mixes. Turkeys on smaller farms are usually allowed to free range and forage like their wild cousins, but also eat a special turkey diet in pellet or crumble form.

Baby cicadas, or nymphs, live underground for over a decade by digging down to tree roots and drinking the sap from them. The nymphs have a long, straw-like mouth called a proboscis, which they use to poke into the veins of trees, known as xylem. Baby cicadas commonly feed from deciduous trees such as dogwood, oak, ash, maple and fruit trees such as apple, pear and peach.

Once the cicadas are old enough, they emerge from the ground and transform into their winged adult form. Mature cicadas only live for a few months, living in the trees in large, buzzing colonies. They mostly survive off of their own energy reserves stored up as a nymph, but they also drink the sap of trees. Eventually, female cicadas lay their eggs in the same trees they lived on, guaranteeing a meal for their young once they hatch.

They are specially adapted to know which flowers have more sugar in their nectar than others, and several species of flowers have also evolved specifically to attract hummingbirds. Hummingbirds have to spend most of their time looking for food because they use up so much energy hovering around. Their long, thin bills help them to reach into blossoms and lap up the nectar with their tongues. Some of their favorite flowers are Columbine, Sage, Honeysuckle, Trumpet Creepers, Butterfly Bushes, Azaleas, Foxgloves and Petunias. However, hummingbirds cannot get all of the nutrients they need from flowers alone. They also eat bugs like spiders and small beetles that live on the plants.

If you want to see more hummingbirds, try planting their favorite flowers, bushes and trees around your home. You’ll be sure to draw in some grateful visitors!

Flies have no teeth, so the only food they can eat is in a liquid form. This means they get most of their nutrition from plant and animal waste products. Some flies, like the fruit fly, eat and lay their eggs in rotting fruits and vegetables, while others suck the sap from trees using their proboscis, which is a tongue shaped like a straw.

Some flies eat less savory items, such as rotting meat or animal feces. They then lay their eggs in the waste and their baby flies, called maggots, finish off the meal. This may seem gross, but flies and maggots are essential for cleaning up nature and preventing the spread of disease. Some doctors even use maggots to clean out the infected wounds of patients, as the little bugs only eat dead flesh and leave everything else untouched.

They have sticky pads on their feet and eyes that are excellent at judging distances to help them maneuver at dangerous heights. So, what do tree frogs eat? Tree frogs are primarily insectivores, meaning they eat bugs and small vertebrates. Smaller frogs eat flies, ants, moths, crickets, butterflies, spiders and beetles. Larger frogs catch snails, lizards and even mice!

If you have a pet tree frog, a standard diet of crickets is recommended. Depending on the size of your frog, you can try feeding it fish like goldfish and guppies, mice, worms and any other bugs you find crawling around your home. what do frogs eat will have more information but, every once in a while you should mix up calcium and multivitamin powders and coat your frog’s food to ensure it’s getting all the nutrition it needs. As well as finding out what tree frogs eat there is plenty of information on the life cycle of a frog here.

They’re a popular pet thanks to their fun-loving and inquisitive personalities, but they have to be fed a special diet to stay healthy. Ferrets are carnivores, much like cats and dogs. They were originally domesticated to control rodent populations in Egypt, where they hunted mice and rats in grain storage facilities. Ferrets were later trained to hunt rabbits because their narrow bodies were perfect for navigating the tunnels of a warren.

Today, most domesticated ferrets eat kibble, although some are still fed raw meat. You can find specialized ferret foods at any pet store, but a high quality kitten food is also an acceptable choice. For treats, ferrets love sweet foods such as raisins and bananas, or scraps of cooked chicken and beef. Another popular choice is canned baby meat, fed from a spoon.

Mother birds leave their nest for about fifteen minutes at a time to find their standard food like worms, bugs, seeds and fruits. The mother then eats what she finds and flies it back to her nest, where she regurgitates the contents of her stomach into the waiting mouths of her chicks. If you have found a baby bird on the ground, it’s best to return it to its nest, as it needs its mother to survive. If the baby has adult feathers, it was probably in the middle of learning how to fly! For more information of the topic of what do birds eat, then please visit the what do birds eat website.

Not all birds are helpless as babies, however. Ground-dwelling birds like chickens, pheasants, guinea fowl and turkeys are able to walk and search for food with their mothers shortly after hatching. They start by eating tiny seeds and insects that their mothers show to them before growing into a regular diet.

They are one of the most expensive types of seafood because of their delicious flavor, but few people stop to wonder what lobsters themselves actually eat. In fact, lobsters are omnivores that primarily eat small animals such as shrimp, krill, sea urchins, crabs, clams, mussels, plankton, small fish and starfish. They also eat seaweed and other aquatic plants, and when nothing better is available they will scavenge from dead creatures in the water. This is what allows lobster fishermen to capture them, although carrion is not a lobster’s favorite meal. Some common lobster baits include oily herrings, mackerels, old leather, chicken or a commercial bait. The most important aspect of lobster bait is that it has to be quite smelly, using a lobster’s powerful nose to lure it in.

They are primarily carnivorous, but they can also ingest fruits and vegetables when meat is scarce. Feral dogs that don’t have owners hunt small game like rabbits and scavenge from litter and trash cans for scraps of food. Most dogs, however, have a home and are fed either raw meat or kibble.

Raw feeding a dog is closer to a natural diet and is healthier, but also more expensive. Owners give their dogs whole chickens, gizzards, turkey necks and any other source of protein they can find. Kibble combines many different ingredients to meet your dog’s every nutritional need. A good dog food has three sources of meat in its first five ingredients.

Besides their basic food, many dogs love treats! There are plenty of treats for sale like biscuits, rawhide chews and bones, but you can also give your dog peanut butter, scraps of meat and eggs. The only foods dogs should not have are onions, grapes, chocolate and cooked bones.

They may look cute and harmless, but moles are actually predators, hunting worms and other ground-dwelling bugs. They have very poor vision, and their tunnels are too dark to see in, so instead they rely on a very fine sense of touch. When an earthworm falls into one of the tunnels, the mole feels the vibration of its impact and immediately locates and bites it. The mole may eat the worm immediately, but will often paralyze it and save it for later. Some moles have over 1000 worms stockpiled! In addition to earthworms, moles also eat grubs and the larval form of many insects, such as cicada nymphs. Contrary to popular belief, moles do not eat plants. The damage many gardeners see to their vegetables is actually the result of small mice wandering through the moles’ tunnels.

Peacocks can be kept as pets, but are usually seen in the wild, where they hunt for food in packs of up to 90 birds. They are omnivorous, but they mostly eat plant matter like new shoots and leaves, seeds and flowers. Grains like oats and wheat along with plant seeds are other favorites. They also catch insects like beetles, snails, frogs, mice and sometimes snakes! Peacocks have been known to gang up on a deadly cobra and kill it through sheer numbers.

Domestic peacocks are kept for their radiant plumage, which can add some interest to a property or supply craft stores. Many peacocks are allowed to forage freely, but they are also fed the same commercial food other game birds like pheasants eat. Peacocks like grain and bread as treats.

They are best known for being able to go without water for long periods of time. Many people still keep camels for milk, meat and transportation, but few people know what camels actually find to eat out there in the desert. They are herbivores, although they’ve been known to snack on fish, leather and tents! Usually, a wild camel eats dry, thorny desert plants and shrubs, including cacti and grass. The hump of a camel is actually a large fat reserve, which helps camels get through the times when food is scarce. Domestic camels are usually fed a higher quality diet with hay, grains like oats or wheat, dates and fresh green grass.

They are carnivorous by nature, and their delicious flavor makes them popular for humans and other predators alike. In the wild, young salmon hatch and are carried downstream toward the ocean, where they eat small plankton and algae until they are big enough to hunt larger prey. Young adults eat aquatic bugs like skippers, mayflies, stoneflies, mosquitoes, dragonflies and worms, as well as small shrimp, tadpoles, fish and eggs. Adult salmon are powerful hunters and eat fish such as smelts, herrings, krill, mackerels and young cod or tuna. When it’s time to return to their rivers of birth and lay their own eggs, salmon stop eating entirely for the duration of their journey.

Like most birds, crows are omnivorous, and their extreme intelligence gives them access to many different types of food. Their main sources of food are insects like flies and beetles. They hunt for bugs by sifting through leaves, sticks and dirt on the ground, where they may also pick up seeds from various plants and other bugs like spiders, worms and even scorpions! Sometimes they find larger meals, like frogs, mice and carrion.

Crows are one of the only animals that are able to create tools to reach their food. Crows have been observed turning a strand of wire into a hook in order to pull a meal from a bottle, or using bread crumbs to lure fish within striking distance.

They generate a thick coat of mucus and are mostly made of water, so they can only live in damp environments. Sea slugs take that one step further and actually live underwater! Slugs come in many varieties, and they eat different things depending on their species. The majority of slugs eat decaying plant matter like fungi, old leaves and dead plants. They help keep forest floors clean and sanitary by constantly removing materials that would otherwise build up on the ground.

Other slugs, however, eat live plants and animals. Gardeners know that slugs love plants with soft leaves, such as Hostas, clematis, lettuce and marigolds, and they can become quite a garden pest if left unchecked. Carnivorous slugs, on the other hand, attack earthworms that come up to the surface, snails and even other slugs. To learn more about snails please visit what do snails eat for a more in depth writeup on snails.

Wild cattle graze on grasses like brome, timothy, orchard grass and wheat grass, and legumes like clover, alfalfa and trefoil. Cows are ruminants, meaning they regurgitate half-digested food and chew it again to extract more nutrition from it. This allows them to survive on even dry grasses that other animals ignore.

Domesticated cows are kept for milk and beef, and can be fed a variety of things depending on where they are raised. Some cows eat grass in a pasture just like their wild cousins, while others are fed a specialized diet of grains, like oats and barley, and grass hay. Beef cows can also be fed soybeans, beet pulp, cracked corn, rolled oats and other food byproducts. These help the cows grow large enough to supply all of the burgers and steaks eaten in the world, while also using up foods that would otherwise go to waste.

Since they have no ears, eyes or nose, you may be wondering what clams can even catch, let alone eat. In fact, a clam is what’s known as a filter feeder. This means they pump water through their bodies and collect any microscopic organisms such as plankton, bacteria and dead material from plants and animals. Their gills, which allow them to breathe underwater, also trap these tiny particles of food and pass them on to the mouth and stomach of the clam. The most common source of food for an average clam is phytoplankton, or algae.

When they first go outside, they nibble on grass to get the majority of their calories. Then, when their initial breakfast is over, they move on to tastier plants that might be harder to find. Wild rabbits love to eat clovers, dandelions, goldenrod, wild strawberries and other tender leafy plants. They will also clip twigs off of shrubs and nibble them, or gnaw the bark off of young trees. In the desert, rabbits eat dry, almost inedible plants such as sagebrush and then chew on succulent cacti for water. This allows them to live where most animals could not.

Wild rabbits have quite the reputation as pests in gardens. The same things we like to eat look especially delicious to rabbits. If you’re growing lettuce, spinach, sunflowers, blueberries or any variety of flower, be sure you have a bunny-proof fence up to protect your plants! Beetles are a widespread family and account for a full 25% of all known animal species. With all those types of beetles, it’s no surprise that they eat many different things, as well. Some beetles are predatory, but most are either omnivorous or herbivorous, relying on decaying plant matter for their daily diet. Many are also adapted to eat just one type of food. The cotton boll weevil, for example, is a major pest for farmers thanks to its diet of cotton. The dung beetle collects and eats the droppings of animals, while leaf beetles, as their name implies, consume the leaves and flowers of plants.

Carnivorous beetles are more general hunters. They eat snails, worms, insects, spiders and pill bugs, as well as the larvae of other bugs. Ground beetles are active predators and the tiger beetle is one of the fastest creatures on the planet!

Armadillos are omnivores with a thick shell to protect them from predators and long claws that they use to dig dens and hunt their favorite prey: bugs. Armadillos love ants and can eat 40,000 of them in one sitting! They also dig up earthworms and grubs, and termites are a rare treat if they can find them. Small animals like scorpions, cockroaches, snails, spiders and even small snakes or lizards are all part of a healthy armadillo diet.

While armadillos eat over 200 pounds of bugs every year, they also eat fruits and plants. Berries like blueberries and blackberries are a sweet find, but young leaves and roots are a more common supplement. Some armadillos like to sneak into gardens and steal some lettuce, too!

The cat ambushes its victims, its distinctive spotted coat helping it to blend into the shadows of the jungle. It is immensely strong and can kill and carry animals much larger than itself. Jaguars hunt large prey such as tapirs, capybaras, pigs, anacondas and deer. However, many jaguars also go after smaller prey like birds, armadillos and monkeys. Like many of the great cats, they can jump into the water to catch their meals, and are excellent swimmers. This allows them to also hunt fish, frogs, caiman and turtles. Sometimes, jaguars will venture onto human property and kill small cows, dogs, goats and other livestock. People traveling through jaguar territory should be cautious, as the cats have been known to hunt humans, but they are less likely to do so than other panthers.

Bees are a familiar sight in spring and summer, bustling to and from flowers and collecting pollen on their legs. Bees live in complex colonies called hives, and every day thousands of worker bees head out to find, gather and process pollen and nectar. Honey bees make and eat honey along with another compound called ‘bee bread.’ Honey is made from nectar, which is stored in wax honeycombs built by the bees themselves. The bees produce special enzymes that help the nectar thicken and turn into honey. Honey is very long-lasting and if stored properly can stay good for more than 2000 years! Bee bread is made by mixing pollen with the nectar, and then fed to bee larvae.

Baby bees are first fed a diet of a substance known as royal jelly, which young worker bees can excrete. If a larva is fed nothing but royal jelly, she will grow into a queen bee. Most larvae, however, graduate to bee bread and honey before becoming adults.

In the wild, bunnies graze on grasses, clover, and other leafy plants like dandelions, chickweed and yarrow. Initially, they nibble lots of grass to ensure that they get the calories they need. If they feel safe, the bunnies will then move on to more choice plants. Many wild rabbits also enjoy perusing gardens and will munch on carrot tops, lettuce and spinach very happily.

Domesticated bunnies usually eat a special hay and pellet diet that can be found in pet stores, but they appreciate treats in the form of most vegetables. Carrots, lettuce, celery leaves, beet tops and broccoli are all rabbit favorites, but should only be given in moderation to avoid overloading their digestive system.

The seal family encompasses many mammals with fins for feet, ranging from the walrus to the sea lion. All, however, are fierce aquatic predators. Most seals are quick and agile hunters, catching fish such as cod, mackerel, herring and trout. Squid are another favorite food, along with crabs, shrimp and mollusks.

While seals like the fur seal are generalist hunters, others have specialized to the prey in their region. Walruses eat mollusks, particularly clams, almost exclusively, while other seals eat only squid or crabs. The leopard seal is a ferocious carnivore that eats penguins, other sea birds and even smaller seals! Sea lions have a similar diet, also preying on seal pups and penguins.

Seals are very protective mothers and watch their young carefully to guard against hungry predators. Seal pups drink milk for anywhere from four days to three years, depending on their species.

Octopuses are highly intelligent predators that hunt along shores and in the open ocean. Their main source of food is mollusks, such as clams, oysters and sea snails. They also hunt many crabs, lobsters and shrimp. They are able to eat these thick-shelled animals with their powerful beak, which is located in the middle of their eight tentacles. This beak allows them to drill a hole through shells and gain access to the meaty bits underneath. In the open ocean, octopuses hunt along the sea floor, usually catching prawns and fish through ambush tactics.

Baby octopuses are tiny, and mostly eat plankton after they hatch. The mother watches after her young for around a month, and doesn’t hunt during that time. She may even eat some of her own arms to keep her babies safe! Once they are big enough for the ocean floor, the young octopuses eat baby starfish and crabs to grow big enough to hunt larger prey.

Most eat a varied diet of fish, rodents and other prey, but the particular types of food depends on the species of eagle. For example, bald eagles eat mainly trout, salmon, rabbits, ducks, raccoons, gulls and geese, but also feed on the corpses of animals such as deer, crabs, cows and even whales! The Steller’s sea eagle, which is the largest of the eagles, eats a similar diet of seafood as the bald eagle, also including cod, squid and mussels. The sea eagle lives off of coasts and will also catch baby seals, cranes and herons. Golden Eagles hunt on the land and eat rabbits, prairie dogs, marmots and foxes. They are even big and powerful enough catch baby deer, cows, goats and sheep.

They cling to eucalyptus trees with their powerful paws and eat leaves all day long. Eucalyptus leaves have very little nutritional value and are actually toxic to most animals, meaning koalas have almost no competition for them. They compensate for the lack of calories in their diet by having very slow metabolisms. A typical koala will actually sleep for up to 18 hours a day!

Different koala communities prefer different species of eucalyptus trees, which include the swamp gum, blue gum, tallowwood and red river gum. When a koala decides it is time to make for a new tree, it will descend to the ground and walk on all fours to the nearest eucalyptus tree. Sometimes koalas will eat leaves from other trees as well, such as acacia trees and trees from the myrtle family.

They hunt within and on the banks of these rivers and sometimes ponds or lakes. Baby alligators are very small and can only hunt worms, shrimp and tiny fish. Later, they grow to be over 1000 pounds and eat razorback boars, black bears, panthers and deer that they ambush from the water. Alligators lay in wait just below the surface of the water for an unsuspecting victim to come by for a drink. Then, while the animal is vulnerable, the alligator launches itself from the water, grabs the animal and drags it underwater to be drowned. Smaller prey include fish like catfish and gar turtles, and birds. Alligators are less likely to attack humans than their cousin the crocodile, but anyone swimming in alligator territory must be very cautious, particularly children.

Hedgehogs are primarily insectivores, although whether they are living in the wild or as pets has a significant impact on their daily diets. Wild hedgehogs forage in grassy areas and woodlands for bugs like crickets, flies and ants. They also eat grass, berries and mushrooms, as well as larger prey such as snails, frogs, slugs, worms and even snakes. Since wild hedgehogs are great for pest control in yards, you might want to attract some by leaving out chicken-flavored cat and dog food.

Domesticated hedgehogs are usually fed specialized feed available at most pet stores. Dry cat food can be used, so long as the hedgehogs have a source of chitin, or the exoskeletons of insects, which they need to digest food properly. Hedgehogs can also be fed scraps of cooked meat, diced peanuts, raisins and insects from pet stores like meal worms and crickets. Such treats should be kept at moderate amounts, however, as many hedgehogs are prone to obesity.
